PUBLIC ADVISORY

The United Nations - Food and Agriculture Organization UN-FAO) had recently reported the “possible major resurgence” of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) with signs of a mutant strain of the H5N1 virus that is making inroads in Asia and other parts of the world, with unpredictable risks to human health and the poultry industry.  Sixty-three (63) countries have been infected with bird flu since its first detection in 2003. Recently affected countries include Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Mongolia, Romania, and Viet Nam.   The new mutant strain of the virus has been found in our two neighbor-countries: China and Viet Nam.

The deadly bird flu can be easily transmitted through inhalation or direct contact with infected discharges or feces of sick birds. The general public is therefore advised to refrain from catching, handling, keeping and trading wild birds to avoid the risk of bird flu and the punishments provided for under Republic Act 9147, the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001.

The general public is also enjoined to keep away from any bird that may be found dead and to immediately report cases of unusual die offs of wild birds to this Bureau, through Telefax No. 9258953, or to nearest DENR field office.  Information of such cases can also be reported to the nearest field office of the Departments of Agriculture and Health.

The general public is further informed that the ban on the importation of wild birds, their by-products and derivatives from bird flu infected countries based on the updated list of the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) or World Organization for Animal Health as imposed by the DENR since January 2004 remains in effect.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) - Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau (PAWB) hereby advises the general public to refrain from collecting, keeping, transporting and trading geckos and other wildlife species unless in accordance with Republic Act (RA) 9147, the “Wildlife  Resources Conservation and Protection Act of 2001”.  The DENR has not issued any permit to any individual or entity allowing the collection of gecko or any wildlife species for direct or indirect trade purposes, hence, such activity is considered unlawful and punishable under Section 28 of RA 9147. The general public is hereby enjoined to report any unlawful act involving any wildlife species to the PAWB through Tel. No. (02) 9258952/53, or to the DENR-Environmental Law Enforcement Task Force at Tel. No. (02) 920-2213, or to the nearest DENR Regional/Field Office.

Mission

Conserve the country's biological diversity through:

  • Establishment, management and development of the National Integrated Protected Areas System
  • Conservation of wildlife resources
  • Nature conservation information and education

Vision

PAWB envisions a perpetual existence of biological and physical diversities in a system of protected areas and other important biological components of the environment managed by a well-informed and empowered citizenry for the sustainable use and enjoyment of present and future generations
