The month of October is a special time of remembering the importance of conserving and protecting tamaraw, an endemic mammal species found only at the island provinces of Mindoro. This celebration is by virtue of the Presidential Proclamation No. 273 “DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER OF EVERY YEAR AS A “SPECIAL MONTH FOR THE CONSERVATION AND PROTECTION OF THE TAMARAW IN MINDORO.” The Proclamation encourages all government offices, agencies and instrumentalities in Mindoro to conduct activities related to the conservation of the Tamaraw and its habitats. In addition, all non-government organizations, private companies or corporations, people’s organizations, academic and scientific institutions, and all other interest groups, within or outside Mindoro are also asked to support and participate in the annual celebration of the Special Month for the Tamaraw. The DENR, through the Tamaraw Conservation Program (TCP) and the Provincial Governments of Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, in cooperation with partner organizations had lined-up activities for the month-long celebration. Activities for this year consist of motorcade, forum, symposium/ fora, day camp, Dalaw-Turo, quiz bee, fun run, and biocamp. These activities reflect this year’s theme, “327 Tamaraw ng Mindoro: Sagisag ng bawat Pilipino, pangalagaan at paramihin ito.” Below is the table of activities:
The tamaraw, a symbol of our natural heritage and pride is threatened to disappear because of our irresponsible action towards the environment. But, we can make a difference. In our small ways, we could all together conserve and protect our tamaraws not just for our benefit but for the benefit of our future generation. Let us participate in the activities lined-up for this special month for Tamaraw conservation. |
