Another year the Bantay Pawikan Incorporated (BPI) of Nagbalayong, Morong, Bataan celebrates its 12th Pawikan Festival.
This 12th celebration for the Pawikan Festival was attended by the Provincial Government Heads of Bataan graced by Senator Loren Legarda. The DOT of Bataan, headed by no other than the first lady of Bataan has fully supported the festival which highlighted the releasing of Olive ridley turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) hatchlings and enjoined and participated by political figures of Bataan including Senator Legarda.
The activity started on Nov 29, 2012 with participants conducted a night patrol to experience how to find the turtle nester and its nest. The night patrol was enjoyed by those participants who witnessed the laying of eggs and the application tags on the turtle flipper and its return to the sea. On Dec 30, 2012 a walk for the cause parade starts at 5:00am which was attended by representative from different Offices. DENR-CENRO Bagac joined the parade lead by CENRO David. A guest from the Sea Turtle Harbor of Zambales lead by Ms. Tina Valenton joined the parade to show it support to the conservation of the endangered marine turtles. The walk for the cause was estimated to have attended last year by around 0.5M supporters last year. Accordingly, the attendance for this year has great in number compared to last year.
The two (2) day celebration was enjoyed by all visitors witnessing the ceremonial releasing of Pawikan hatchlings in the waters of West Philippine. Again the tireless Street dancing competition which were participated by dancers representing its municipalities of Bataan. Dancers dressed/costumes turtle-like clothing which gives message related to the life of marine turtles. The competing teams showed energy undermining the both heat of the sun the sand.
Paddle painting contest, sand castling (sand sculpture) contest, coastal clean-up project, were participated by different schools.
Natures Camp was conducted alongside with the celebration, Lectures on the Biology and Ecology were both conducted by Technical staff from the Pawikan Conservation Project (PCP) and Nature and Recreation Division (NRED) of PAWB-DENR.
The Informative Diorama Exhibit (Nesting Turtle and Hatchlings Emergence) prepared by Ms Emie Ramoso and Marco Baltazar was highlighted during the festival. The exhibit called the attention of Senator Legarda which asked several questions about the exhibit.
On December 1, 2012 the Team attended the 4th Grand Pawikan Festival of Montemar Beach Club Inc. (MBCI) in Bagac, Bataan.
The activity also highlighted the success of the Montemar Resort in saving and translocating/transplanted around 47,000 eggs of marine turtle eggs in their hatchery. This year Montemar hatchery have transplanted around 8,497 eggs.
An Informative Diorama Exhibit (Nesting Turtle and Hatchlings Emergence) was set-up by Ms Emie Ramoso, Nilo Ramoso and Marco Baltazar with an additional informative tarpaulin was installed to somehow inform guest of the resort.
In the afternoon the Team joined the Progam Grand Pawikan Festival for the Club members of MBCI. An oreintation on the proper handling of hatchlings was given by us. Ms Merliza Torre represented CENRO Juanito David and reports the development and annual production of the Hatchery of Montemar.
