South China Sea Project
Recognizing that the South China Sea is a globally significant centre of marine biodiversity, the project on "Reversing Environmental Degradation Trends in the South China and Gulf of Thailand" (also known as the UNEP/GEF South China Sea Project) is an attempt to address environmental concerns that have resulted from the rapid pace of development and industrialization, which has occurred over the last decade. This GEF project, implemented by UNEP, aims to develop regionally coordinated programmes of action designed to reverse environmental degradation particularly in the area of coastal habitat degradation and loss, halt land-based pollution and address the issue of fisheries over-exploitation.
