Land Cover

Some extensive areas of old growth forest are shown on the low hills there on recent forest cover maps. There are reported to be extensive areas of forest on limestone (ironwood) and beach forest there.

16 birds species are endemic to Palawan, 5 are considred common and 1 vulnerable, 9 endemic species of mammals, 25 species of herpetofauna are endemic

Marine Reptiles- Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata, Lepidochelys olivacea

Birds - Terpsiphone cyanescens, Prionochilus plateni, Anthracoceros marchei, Polyplectron emphanum,  Collocalia palawanensis, Ixos palawanensis, Chloropsis palawanensis, Copsychus niger.   

Marine Mammals -  Neophocaena phocaenoides and Tursiops truncatus.

Transboundary Human Activities

Fishing (>2/3 of the population) and farming (1/3 of the population) also some internationally owned private resorts, seasonal gathering of birds nest.

Threats  
External Source of Change sedimentation due to kaingin and commercial logging. Small scale timber extraction and the operations of well-organized logging operations are hastening the depletion of forest cover on the island.

The Ten Knots Development Corporation had developed the El-Nido Resort for eco-tourism, including birdwatching.

Existing status of legislation

El-Nido Managed Protected Area was proclaimed by virtue of Proc. No. 32 on October 8, 1998.

Mainland Palawan and its associated islands are included in a Biosphere reserve, Environmentally Critical Areas Network (ECAN), to zone the island, which incorporates the existing El-Nido Marine Sanctuary and other protected areas. This includes terrestial core zone (primitive wilderness and strictly protected) and buffer zone (regulated use allowed) areas.
